SEMINAR: Alternatives to Purchasing Dogs from Retail Stores, Including Fostering

Also: Update on Puppy Mill Legislation

On September 24, 2008 this Seminar was presented to an audience of 45 individuals. Attorneys Jessie Smith, Cori Menkin and Sarah Speed updated our audience on the current status of anti-puppy mill legislation in Pennsylvania. Many questions were asked about the details of the legislation and what audience members could do to further the bill’s passage through the PA Senate. The speakers encouraged the audience to tell their friends to contact their representatives in Harrisburg to vote in favor of the anti-puppy mill legislation.

Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue had several members of their team present with Labrador retrievers they have been fostering. Members of Brookline and Melissa Resnick, DVM presented details of the fostering process and the rewards of fostering. Other foster organizations, along with some of their foster dogs, were also present.

The speakers stressed the fact that almost all dogs sold in retail stores came from puppy mills. They strongly urged the audience and their friends to acquire dogs from organizations other than retail stores. Sue Cosby discussed adoption and rescue procedures at AWA of South Jersey. Ray Little, director of adoptions, rescue and foster care at the Pennsylvania SPCA discussed procedures and success at the SPCA.

On our website under LEARN – Adoption: Breed Specific, Local, Regional, National and International – there are numerous references to many websites providing you options for your rescue and adoption needs.
